F. H. Prager Perry

Although the name indicates that F.H. Prager comes from Prague, guys from this Czech cidery, Ondřej and Cyril are actually based in Kladno. As per information that you can find on their website, their ciders and perry were inspired by English cider and Spanish sidra, but the guys decided to make cider using their own Czech way using Czech apples and pears.

Company: F.H. Prager
Place of Origin: Kladno, Czech Republic
Pears: Czech pears
Sweetness as per label: medium dry
ABV: 4.9 %
Package type: 330ml amber glass bottle with crown cap
Recommended type of glass: pint glass or flute

Appearance: pours a clear dark golden with petillant carbonation and a thin white ring around the glass. Body is medium.

Aroma/Nose: the aroma is very intense as if this perry was just waiting for me to open the bottle to take a sniff. So, on the nose I can sense fresh and ripe pears with a very distant acetic acidity and cloves. The aroma is slightly sweet and dry at the same time with a touch of white wine along with fruity and floral notes. There is a hint of fermented apples as well. Beautiful aroma! Very inviting!

Taste: it starts with a moderate level of sweetness and light acidity. On the medium palate quite strong bitter taste resembling grapefruit peel. The intensity of bitter notes reduces quickly bringing to light a mild acetic-acidity with a touch of cloves. The finish is dry and still slightly bitter with a hint of fresh pear and minor astringent notes.

Overall: I’m not a big perry fan as perry tastes usually too sweet to my palate. So I was very skeptical towards Perry from F.H. Prager. But, wow! I’m amazed. This is the most impressive and the best perry I have tried until now. I think it will be difficult to really beat this perry. The nose is just brilliant, very rich and complex. The taste is medium sweet, but not overly sweet as some perry’s are, with a touch of acidity to break the sweetness. I can’t wait to try their ciders! Guys, you have set the bar very high. Congrats!  5/6

However, due to the quite bitter taste in the beginning (and by writing this I really mean it) I think this perry will not appeal to everyone’s palate.

Availability: F.H. Prager has their own online.shop. As per InCider Bar’s blog perry is seasonal and they have it when it’s available. My favorite Czech online shop, Opily jabko also has it.

Price: purchased online from Opily jabko at 38 CZK (1.43 EUR).
