Zeffer Cider Company is actually based in Auckland, New Zealand. But after a successful crowdfunding campaign, where they raised $1.2 million they are ready to expand to other parts of the globe such as Asia and apparently Berlin. Anyway, I came across their cider during my visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I’ve decided to start with their Red Apple.Company: Zeffer Cider Co.
Place of Origin: Makana, NZ
Apples: red apple varieties such as Mahana Red Braeburn
Sweetness as per label: unknown
Package type: 330 ml green glass bottle with crown cap
Recommended type of glass: pint glass, chalice glass or white wine glass
Appearance: pours a clear pale yellow straw with light ruby hues and a short-lived white foam, which reduces to a ring. Medium carbonation. Body is low.
Aroma/Nose: the nose has mild funky notes of barnyard, leather and beeswax. I am also getting fruity notes of crisp and fresh red apple, red berries and sweet apple. Very refreshing and mouth watery.
Taste: it starts watery with low to medium sweetness and low acidity, followed by notes of crisp red apple, red berries. It’s like biting into a fresh juicy red apple. I can also get a very distant solvent-like note. The finish is dry and has a nice lingering gentle grapefruit bitterness and very light astringency.
Overall: Imagine sitting in the tropics, relaxing and sipping this refreshing, light, extremely tasty and rich cider, which tastes so juicy and appley, but still smoothly funky and it’s so drinkable you can’t get enough of it. This is how Zeffer’s Red Apple tastes like. Keep an eye on this cider on your trip to New Zealand, Australia or Asia. Trust me, you will not regret it. Just one comment, to me the Red Apple could be a bit less sweet. 4/6
Availability: Seems that Lager Lager in Berlin is at the moment the only store stocking Zeffer’s ciders in Europe.
Price: paid 24 RM (4.88 EUR) in Ales & Lagers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
