Ābolu Sidrs Pussausais 2016 is a semi-dry offering from Mr. Plūme. If you happen to go to Latvia, don’t forget to visit Maris and his wife at their cidery. If you’re lucky, perhaps Maris will play his guitar. Company: Mr. Plūme sidra darītava
Place of Origin: Jumpravas pagasts, Lielvārdes novads, Latvia
Apples a blend of local apple varieties
Sweetness as per label:
Package type: 750ml clear glass with natural cork
Recommended type of glass: wine glass or snifter
Appearance: pours a clear straw yellow with no head. No visible carbonation. Body is low to medium.
Aroma/Nose: the aroma is intense and fruity with notes of cinnamon, baked apples, quince, fresh and ripe yellow apples with a hint of green apples and light pear.
Taste: my first taste is medium sweet, low to medium acidity of lemon. The mid-palate has smokiness, a note of caramel, yellow apples, light quince, lingering yet pleasant lemon. Finishes with a light bitterness of apple seeds and caramel.
Overall: after sampling 5 ciders from Mr. Plūme I have the impression that they have a very similar tasting profile. The only significant difference I can get is the level of sweetness. Honestly, I’d wish more diversity in taste between Mr. Plūme’s offerings. As for the Pussausais, it is also a very pleasant and drinkable cider with a lovely and refreshing nose. Just like the previously reviewed ciders of Mr. Plūme. I guess if it was sparkling it would taste even better and even more refreshing than uncarbonated version. It’s an apple wine that will please everyone’s palate but I would rather advise to drink it on a warm than a hot day. I would buy it again. 4.5/6
Availability: available from Mr. Plūme. At farmers markets and many other places in Latvia. Possibly also from Siidrimaja in Tallinn, at Sarkozy in Vilnius, Holm Cider in Copenhagen and MostBirnHaus in Austria.
